Edith Marquez

Edith Marquez has been singing her lungs out for decades. With a huge range this mezzo-soprano Mexican singer joined the pop group Timbiriche as a replacement for Mariana Garza then stayed on for four years.

Edith has acted in several soap operas most recently in Manana es para siempre.

We spoke briefly before her recent appearance at Circuit Nightclub. (the interview is translated from Spanish)

JN: (Jerry Nunn) Hola, Edith. You were born in Mexico?

EM: (Edith Marquez) Yes, in Mexico City.

JN: Is this your first time in Chicago?

EM: No, it is my second time.

JN: How did it go before?

EM: I went to another club with the promoter that is here tonight, Joe. The truth is I have been lucky enough to perform in the gay community in the United States and Mexico as well. I have a lot of respect for my gay friends and they know how to party.

JN: You must have studied for a long time to have such a vocal range.

EM: I did study a lot. I studied with a teacher that taught me how to sing from a very young age.

JN: Do you still speak to members of the group Timbiriche like Paulina Rubio?

EM: Well, the problem is we don’t close by each other. Some of the group lives in the United States now. I live in Mexico. It is not that we don’t want to but a lot of us are busy with our careers and don’t have a lot of time. We all love each other very much. Last week we were in Los Angeles and I was able to see Diego.

JN: Your song “Mirame” is very dramatic. Can you talk about it?

EM: There are a lot of feelings with that song. It is about a past partner and can apply to many relationships. It is one of my favorites.

JN: What do you think when you see a drag queen singing your songs in a bar?

EM: Oh, I love it! It’s a big honor. It really makes me happy to see people perform my songs and have a good time.

JN: When are you putting out some new songs?

EM: Well, this time out I am promoting past songs. On March 21 I will be at Auditorio Nacional and then we will record a video for the second single called “Ese Beso’ in New York. So I am really happy with all of this work and appearances.

JN: I heard you might be singing a lot of songs in this appearance.

EM: More or less and I want to put on a good show for this audience.

JN: Do you have a website where people can go to and find out more about you?

EM: Yes, I do. My website is http://edithmarquez.com/home.php. People can follow me on Twitter and find updates there as well.

JN: Perfecto! Thanks so much for the interview. I know you have to get ready for the show.

EM: Thank you!
