If you like Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and Gwen Steffani, you are going to effing love Kimbra!
This multifaceted singer from New Zeland, yes the land of Mr. Frodo himself, is a treasure to discover if you haven’t yet! Kimbra recently made her American debut with the Belgium-Australian artist Goyte on Saturday Night Live the 18th of April singing his world wide hit “Somebody That I used to Know“. She recently played South X South West and is growing a ton of steam not just over seas but here in the states with songs like the latter and her debut single “Cameo Lover“!
Her musical style stems from pop, dance, rock, and jazz. It’s not only her voice that will suck you into her world but her writing ability as well! Her debut album will be released in the U.S. on May the 22nd and is called Vows which deals with love, promises, and heartache, all the delicious things you look for in a fun, pop, Adele like heartbreak album.
She recently has collaborated with DJ A-Trak and Mark Foster from Foster the People, on a track called “Warrior” an old school, electronic, dance extravaganza with a music video that will make you get into some luche libre!
Check out her music videos and rate this artist below Fusionites!

John Oudo is a name we should look forward to hearing about in the future Fusionites! According to the London based DJ, House fans are becoming more open minded with their tastes in music.
Oudo is a jack of all trades when it comes to mixing and mastering the music that we call House! He not only produces but composes and writes his own songs. His record label, Big Spin Music, has introduced some of the livest up and coming artists like London based singer/songwriter Selina Campbell, and Chicago based songstress Nicole Mitchell!
Oudo has spun his way to become a major player in the house and club circuit for over twelve years now, experimenting with everything from soul, to pop, and dance music. He has received Global acclaim from heavy weights in the dance music scene, radio, and press alike. One unique trick John does to his tracks, he will release three different versions of each song he does to satisfy any house, dance, or club head alike in order to serve each persons musical tastes. He will produce an original radio mix, an atmospheric dub mix, and a synthesizm vocal mix making one track unique in three very different ways, which makes his music even more appealing to house fans! Look for his string of singles coming out this year!
Check out John Oudo and his band The Sound featuring Nicole Mitchell from Chicago, on one of his recent tracks, “Hold Me Tighter” (his radio mix version) and let us know what you think!

This week Fusionites I want all of you to celebrate love with me this Valentines week by looking at the work and lives of two very important and talented women. Unfortunately for todays article there is a little bit of a bittersweet sting. But what is love without a little bitter sweetness to it? Love always makes us appreciate what he have and what we had when it is gone.
I’m sure many of us have already heard about the recent and sudden death of one of the most celebrated songbirds of our time, Ms. Whitney Houston this past Saturday February 11th 2012. Ms. Houston passed on the eve of the 54th ammy Awards this weekend. The determining factor in her sudden death are still very much under investigation but I wanted to take a step back and remember the life and career of one of the most important and influential Pop Icons of our day! So let’s take a look at the deeply talented and deeply troubled songstress Whitney Elizabeth Houston.
If you Google or even Wiki her this is what you will find out about our fallen songstress. She was born in New Jersey in the Summer of 1963. She was of African-American, Native American, and Dutch descent. Her Mother is famous Gospel legend Cissy Houston, her cousins were Dionne and Dee Dee Warrick, her Godmother-Aretha Franklin. Born into a highly musical family Whitney was first exposed to music through the Baptist and Pentecostal church as she grew up. She was also impacted by artists such as Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack, and Gladys Knight.
She had an uncanny Mezzo-Soprano voice and became a backup singer for Lou Rawls and Jermaine Jackson when she was only fifteen years old. She also was a background singer for Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” which would later turn into an even larger hit due to Whitney’s version on the Grammy winning album The Bodyguard. She also started modeling after she was spotted by a fashion photographer, at Carnegie Hall, singing with her mother. She became the first African-American woman to grace the cover of Seventeen Magazine.
She was finally discovered in 1983 and was signed to Arista Records by Clive Davis himself after he saw the songstress sing at a club with her mother. Her first album came out in February of 1985 which was self titled spawning a ton of acclaim and recognition with songs like “You Give Me Good Love,” “Saving All My Love For You,” and the “Greatest Love of All.” The album would stay atop Billboards 200 top albums for fourteen weeks straight and her song, “Greatest Love of All” became the number one album of the year and was certified 13x’s Platinum in the U.S. and sold a total of 25 million copies Worldwide.
In 1986 she won her first Grammy award for Best Pop Vocal Performance for “Saving All My Love For You.” She later won an Emmy for that same performance at the Grammys, for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.
Her 2nd album was released in 1987 with her first name as the title. Though the album had mixed reviews Whitney ended up being the first artist to land at #1 on both U.S. and U.K. charts. With her single “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” she won her 2nd Grammy award. When it came to her 3rd album she took an edgier approach working with producers like Babyface, Stevie Wonder, and L.A. Reid. Some thought the album was too over the top and superficial but others loved her fresher R&B direction. In 1990 Houston performed the “Star Spangled Banner” at the Superbowl and her rendition of the song was released as a commercial single and reached the top 20 on the U.S. charts making her the only artist to turn the national anthem into a pop hit! Proceeds went to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund and stirred patriotism across the board in the nation due to the U.S. being in the thick of the Persion Gulf War.
1992 would bring her biggest success, I believe to date, with the release of her film debut, “ The Bodyguard.” The soundtracks lead single, “ I Will Always Love You” written and originally recorded by Ms. Dolly Parton was acclaimed by many critics. The single peaked at #1 on Billboard and went 4x’s platinum and became the best-selling single by a female artist in U.S. history! Whitney went on to win three more Grammys, a slew of Billboard Awards, Soul Train Awards, an NAACP Image Award, and the Sammy Davis Jr Entertainer of the Year award!
In 1998 My Love Is Your Love was released to critical acclaim with an even more funkier and edgier vibe due to producers Missy Elliot, Rodney Jerkins, and Wyclef Jean. Singles such as “Heartbreak Hotel” and “It’ Not Right But It’s Okay” became huge on the dance and club charts spinning at number one once again! The Album went 4x’s Platinum. That same year she also won an Academy Award for her duet with Mariah Carey, who she had a respectful rivalry with back then, with the song, “When You Believe” for the Prince of Egypt soundtrack.

Just Whitney came out in 2002 and was released to mix reviews and a few of the singles did top the Billboards Hot Dance Club Play hits. The rumors began after this about her drug use to which she denied to a point but did admit to having had substance abuse with alcohol, weed, and cocaine.
After years of controversy with her marriage to bad boy Bobby Brown, and the rumors of drug use spinning out of control Whitney released I Look to You in 2009. The single “I Look to You” went Gold and marked her first #1 album since the Bodyguard! The album itself went Platinum.
After all of the accolaides and her comeback album, the tour she embarked on was trampled by sad reviews and fans who actually walked out of her concerts. The tour was cancelled do to Whitneys health issues and poor reviews. Her battle she kept behind closed doors most of the time with substance abuse, but was visible for everyone to see.
Her influence shined through so many people and her art dominated the Pop and dance scene leading the way for other artists to this day! Her charity work and stance on Aparthide were exceptional. She became one of the 1st African American Female Artists to grace MTV. There was a Barbie Doll inspired in Houstons image, but I think what Richard Corliss of Time magazine said of her career explains it all,
“Of her first albums ten cuts, six would be ballads. This chanteuse Houston, had to fight for air play with rockers. The young lady had to stand uncovered in the locker room of macho rock. The soul strutter had to seduce a music audience that anointed few Black artists with superstardom…she was a phenomenon waiting to happen, a canny tapping of the listeners yen for a return to the musical middle. And because every new star creates her own genre, her success has helped other Blacks, other Women, other Smooth singers find an avid reception in the Pop Marketplace.”
Her acheviements were many here are some just to name a few: She is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most awarded female act of all time having 6 Grammys, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, 2 Emmys, 1 Oscar, and has sold over 170 million albums worldwide! She set the bar for female performers and actresses with movies like the Bodyguard, and Waiting to Exhale and her soon to be released remake of Sparkle. Her style and grace influenced a generation of young artists and will continue too because her voice will never be anything less then perfection. Her light may have dimmed early, but it will always shine on through her music, her movies, and her angelic voice. I will leave you with this message from Ms. Houston herself on this Valentines week, “I wish you joy and happiness but above all I wish you love.”

Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite little punching bag at the moment Miss Lana Del Rey. I can honestly say I had no idea who this artist was until she bombed her hit song, “Video Games” on SNL just two weeks ago, but I can also honestly say that when I heard this girls voice I knew and you’ll know that we have found someone very special here. The way I feel about Lana is the same way I felt the first time I heard Amy Winehouse. The girls voice is meant to heard. It’s unique, it’s dare I say transcendent, and can I just say the girls got mad writing skills!
Lana aka Lizzy Grant, (real name Elizabeth Grant), was born in Lake Placid, New York and is the daughter of investor Rob Grant. Growing up this teenager was shipped off by her parents to Connecticut to boarding school for getting involved with drugs and alcohol, (such is the story with any great artist or writer it seems). This evidently influenced her music through her writing as she grew as an artist.
You may be wondering where her name came from and why she changed it. During an interview with Vogue Lana said, “I wanted a name I could shape the music towards…I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my Friends from Cuba & Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue.”
In 2010 Del Rey released a full-length album titled Lana Del Rey AKA Lizzy Grant. It was available to buy on iTunes for a limited time. However Lana bought the rights back to the album from the label in what some think was a calculated decision to make it difficult to distribute and keep it in circulation.
In the Summer of 2011 Lana was signed to Stranger Records and released her single “Video Games” to which singing it was her eminent fall on her first appearance on U.S. television on Saturday Night Live. But let’s not get so down on her just yet we still have a lot to learn about little Miss Lana. In October of last year she was signed to Interscope and has since promoted the new album, Born To Die at a number of live shows like MTV Push and at the places like the Bowery Ballroom. Yet taking a step back she originally released Video Games on Youtube and became an overnight sensation before signing with Interscope. She has been quoted saying that the only reason she released it was because it was her favorite song on the album and had no intention of it being the first single. Her fans loved it making her a star without an album even out.
Rolling Stone described Del Rey’s style and stage presence as being, “The polarizing indie hipstress…” who, “Brought her ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ swagu” to the stage. RS also noted that despite being obviously nervous on stage, something she still needs to get confident at, she, “sang with considerable confidence…her transitions could be rather jarring.”
In an interview with MTV on January the 13th, two days before her SNL appearance Lana was asked how she felt about making the appearance on the live show. She said that, “It’s an honor because I don’t think that they’ve even had an artist on that hasn’t had a record out…” when asked why her, she defended her spot on the live show by saying, “because I’m a good musician and I’ve been singing for a very long time, and I think that Lorne Michaels knows that…it’s not a fluke decision…” She was surprised about being booked for the gig when it was announced to her, “I didn’t even have time to have a reaction you just think Don’t f@ck up! That’s all you ever think with live television and you hope that it goes well.” She went on to say that she sometimes feels she has grown as a performer, but is usually preoccupied with her family and what not to really pay attention to that and that it depends on the day and that first and foremost she is a writer then a singer.
Her influences are pop icons like Britney Spears, Nirvana, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Eminem.
When describing her song “Video Games” she says its a perfect representation of her and that its a 5minute love ballad without any drums. The premise is her past relationship with a person in its early days and the small things that stick out that meant a lot to her. But don’t let me tell you, see for yourself and let us here at Fusion know what you think about her videos Born to Die and Video Games.

The second artist on my list this week Fusionites is actually a duo!
If you haven’t heard of Chromeo it’s about time you have! This electro funk duo comes to you direct from Canada.
The duo is composed of P-Thugg and Dave 1, (real names Patrick Gemayel and David Macklovitch). The two childhood friends describe themselves as the “the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the the dawn of human culture,”according Complex.
They met in the mid 90′s in high school, when Dave 1′s brother A-Trak was becoming a world champion in the Disco Mix Club Championships around 1997. Dave 1 was also friends with Tiga and was working with him at his label Turbo, to which shortly after in 2001-2002 the duo got signed to Tigas label and started making tracks as Chromeo with Dave 1 on lead vocals and guitar, and P-Thugg on keyboards, synthesizer, and talk box.
In 2004 they released their first album She’s in Control which had an 80′s feel. Their song “Needy Girl” became a World wide hit in the club scene along with “Hot Mess” which featured La Roux. They released Fancy Footwork three years later which took them on a two year world tour. The track was used in a VO5 Extreme Hair Gel advertisement in the UK and the video got over 666,000 hits off of Youtube. In 2010 they released Business Casual an homage to 80′s flash dance and 70′s disco vibes with a hint of electro funk. Singles like “When the Night Falls,” “Don’t Turn On the Lights,” and “Night By Night” became instant hits with imaginative videos to help boost their cred. In 2011 they released the world smallest album called Drive Time which was made up of 55 songs in only 183 seconds. It was made for Nokia cell phones with a limited release of only forty copies.
This year they will be releasing their follow up to Business Casual and with family and friends like A-Trak and Tiga and comparisons to Duck Sauce you better believe that Chromeo will bring it! Be on the look out for the yet untitled new album to be released this year!
