Daft Punk Gets Random

It was announced a few weeks back after a mysterious robot head commercial came on during Saturday Night Live, that Daft Punk will be back with a release this summer after nearly a 8 year break. No further information was given.

Now, another commercial aired this weekend with the same song being featured (entitled “Get Lucky), again during SNL, which is a preview for their new EP called “Random Access Memories” which will be their debut release with Columbia Records. During the commercial Daft Punk encourages people to check out the pre-order for iTunes. The planned release date is May 21st which is stated on the duo’s updated web-site.

At an interview at Miami’s Ultra Music Conference, Nile Rodgers, who worked with the French duo on the album stated, “About a year ago, I get a knock on the door – first a virtual one and then a real knock – from [Daft Punk's] Guy-Manuel and Thomas. The collaboration felt so unbelievably natural that it made me realize that I need to be in the studio with people. I love partnering with people. And then from that moment, a windfall of recording started happening. I just started going in with whomever I could.”

Sounds like he’s got Da Funk!

Timberlake Brings Himself Back

Today Justin Timberlake’s highly-anticipated album – The 20/20 Experience – drops! And to make sure you know it, Justin will be on the CW network tonight promoting the album’s release on Target Presents the iHeartRadio Album Release Party at 8pm (eastern), however, that has not been the only appearance JT has been making.

It’s been 7 years since we last had an official album release from Justin, which you may not have noticed. He’s made countless appearances on Saturday Night Live (last weeks show got a boost in the ratings by about 5 million viewers), and even got to host 5 times…already! Then he goes and wins an Emmy for his appearance in 2007.

He hopped on top of cars with Madonna in the “4 Minutes to Save the World” video and he’s showed us he can be social by not only having a supporting role in The Social Network, but then helped relaunch MySpace!

Timberlake wrapped up a week of appearances on Jimmy Fallon last week (calling it “Timberweek”), then headed south to Texas at SXSW to close out the weekend musical festivities by appearing at a venue that could only hold 800 people, with a guitar in hand, singing his hits, acoustically.

The 20/20 Experience is not the last we’ll hear from Justin this year. He’s labeling this album as “part 1″ he stated in an interview with Ryan Seacrest. “I need to clear up a rumor,” he told the crowd at the release party. “This whole thing about this being the first half of the album is true.” He indicated that a “part 2″ will be popping up around November of THIS year.

Timberlake brought “sexy” back 7-years ago, now he’s just bringing himself…make some room!

And, yes, the rumors are true…there WILL be a part 2 to this blog…

If you like Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and Gwen Steffani, you are going to effing love Kimbra!

This multifaceted singer from New Zeland, yes the land of Mr. Frodo himself, is a treasure to discover if you haven’t yet! Kimbra recently made her American debut with the Belgium-Australian artist Goyte on Saturday Night Live the 18th of April singing his world wide hit “Somebody That I used to Know“. She recently played South X South West and is growing a ton of steam not just over seas but here in the states with songs like the latter and her debut single “Cameo Lover“!

Her musical style stems from pop, dance, rock, and jazz. It’s not only her voice that will suck you into her world but her writing ability as well! Her debut album will be released in the U.S. on May the 22nd and is called Vows which deals with love, promises, and heartache, all the delicious things you look for in a fun, pop, Adele like heartbreak album.

She recently has collaborated with DJ A-Trak and Mark Foster from Foster the People, on a track called “Warrior” an old school, electronic, dance extravaganza with a music video that will make you get into some luche libre!

Who The F@ck Is Lana Del Rey?

Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite little punching bag at the moment Miss Lana Del Rey. I can honestly say I had no idea who this artist was until she bombed her hit song, “Video Games” on SNL just two weeks ago, but I can also honestly say that when I heard this girls voice I knew and you’ll know that we have found someone very special here. The way I feel about Lana is the same way I felt the first time I heard Amy Winehouse. The girls voice is meant to heard. It’s unique, it’s dare I say transcendent, and can I just say the girls got mad writing skills!

Lana aka Lizzy Grant, (real name Elizabeth Grant), was born in Lake Placid, New York and is the daughter of investor Rob Grant. Growing up this teenager was shipped off by her parents to Connecticut to boarding school for getting involved with drugs and alcohol, (such is the story with any great artist or writer it seems). This evidently influenced her music through her writing as she grew as an artist.

You may be wondering where her name came from and why she changed it. During an interview with Vogue Lana said, “I wanted a name I could shape the music towards…I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my Friends from Cuba & Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue.”

In 2010 Del Rey released a full-length album titled Lana Del Rey AKA Lizzy Grant. It was available to buy on iTunes  for a limited time. However Lana bought the rights back to the album from the label in what some think was a calculated decision to make it difficult to distribute and keep it in circulation.

In the Summer of 2011 Lana was signed to Stranger Records and released her single “Video Games” to which singing it was her eminent fall on her first appearance on U.S. television on Saturday Night Live. But let’s not get so down on her just yet we still have a lot to learn about little Miss Lana. In October of last year she was signed to Interscope and has since promoted the new album, Born To Die at a number of live shows like MTV Push and at the places like the Bowery Ballroom. Yet taking a step back she originally released Video Games on Youtube and became an overnight sensation before signing with Interscope. She has been quoted saying that the only reason she released it was because it was her favorite song on the album and had no intention of it being the first single. Her fans loved it making her a star without an album even out.

Rolling Stone described Del Rey’s style and stage presence as  being, “The polarizing indie hipstress…” who, “Brought her ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ swagu” to the stage. RS also noted that despite being obviously nervous on stage, something she still needs to get confident at, she, “sang with considerable confidence…her transitions could be rather jarring.”

In an interview with MTV on January the 13th, two days before her SNL appearance Lana was asked how she felt about making the appearance on the live show. She said that, “It’s an honor because I don’t think that they’ve even had an artist on that hasn’t had a record out…” when asked why her, she defended her spot on the live show by saying, “because I’m a good musician and I’ve been singing for a very long time, and I think that Lorne Michaels knows that…it’s not a fluke decision…” She was surprised about being booked for the gig when it was announced to her, “I didn’t even have time to have a reaction you just think Don’t f@ck up! That’s all you ever think with live television and you hope that it goes well.” She went on to say that she sometimes feels she has grown as a performer, but is usually preoccupied with her family and what not to really pay attention to that and that it depends on the day and that first and foremost she is a writer then a singer.

Her influences are pop icons like Britney Spears, Nirvana, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Eminem.

When describing her song “Video Games” she says its a perfect representation of her and that its a 5minute love ballad without any drums. The premise is her past relationship with a person in its early days and the small things that stick out that meant a lot to her. But don’t let me tell you, see for yourself and let us here at Fusion know what you think about her videos Born to Die and Video Games.

Robyn Performs Live on SNL

(Michelle Resendiz)

My fave dance pop girl Robyn performed live on Saturday Night Live over the weekend. December 10th, 2011 she rocked the stage with a double performance; first doing her Grammy-nominated single “Call Your Girlfriend”, and following it up with my personal favorite “Dancing On My own.” Did we mention that Katy Perry hosted the show? Both the ladies KILLED it. I love seeing some femmes taking over the world!

Katy Perry, who hosted the show, raved about Robyn to MTV earlier in the week, saying: “I don’t need to give her advice. She needs to give me advice. She’s cool, dude. She makes everyone cooler. … She’s just, like, the epitome of effortless cool, like you look at her wardrobe and you think, ‘I don’t think I could wear that,’ but she wears it and she just owns it.”

Adding: “She’s always wearing platform shoes, whether it’s, like, creepers or Prada shoes. And she was wearing them way back when, in the beginning of the tour,” she said. “And now Prada’s doing them; everyone’s wearing them. Rihanna’s wearing them. I’m wearing them after all of the convincing, so she’s kind of the tastemaker. It’s gonna be a great show because of that.”

Check out the performances of her hits Here… but for now we need to talk fashion. I love Robyn and her iconic attitude, and lately she’s been moving up the fashion scales as she’s moving the music charts. Her A-symmetrical hairstyle totally molded the new fashion trends in hair this season, but her new look hasn’t seemed to catch on. I have to be honest I don’t know if I’m digging her new look either. I just don’t like that little boy bowl hair cut… what do you guys think?

Katy Perry on Saturday Night Live

(Michelle Resendiz)

Saturday Night Live December 10th, 2011 is ready for you Katy Perry! That’s right Fusionites,  set your DVR’s because she will be hosting the hilarious show, and I am sure she won’t disappoint. Katy, also recently received a special AMA Award of Achievement for being the first woman in the history of pop music to have five No. 1 singles from one album.

Congratulations Katy! We love you!

Wait theres more! There’s a lot of  buzz going around her lately… From the new ‘edible’ perfume, to the Broadway stage, Katy is taking advantage of her talents. Check out the news on her possible role as the iconic Marilyn Monroe.

Katy Perry could be playing Marilyn Monroe on the Broadway stage. Harvey Weinstein, a co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, opened up that he wants to make a musical take on “My Week with Marilyn” and revealed that he’s been considering Perry to star as the iconic blond beauty.

Speaking to E! News about his plan, Weinstein said, “If the movie works, I would try to make it a musical and I would go to Katy first.” He went on explaining, “I think she can play Marilyn on the Broadway stage… I think she would be amazing.”

While the plan to adapt “My Week with Marilyn” to the Broadway stage is still in a very early phase, Weinstein admitted he is confident about the movie itself. He believes that Michelle Williams will get her third Academy Award nomination for her acting in the drama.
