Trending: 2013 Billboard Music Awards

bbmas-2013-announcement-b-650-430

Justin booed, Taylor Swift DOES have a long lasting relationship, and Miguel kicks it…literally! The 2013 Billboard Music Awards were this Sunday, and it turned out to be quite the event.

Next to the Grammy’s, winning at the Billboard Awards shows an Artist they made it in the music world.  The Billboard Award is not about how good you are, it’s how well you’ve done. From Top Selling Albums to Highest Paid Concerts, the Billboard Awards complete the musicians resume with a respected trophy.

Hosted by Tracy Morgan, The ABC broadcast brought in the ratings, ranking at #1 on Sunday night, and had a 28% increase from last year pulling in 9.47 million viewers.

Taylor Swift brought in the most wins (8), while Justin Beiber brought in the least (1). While Taylor accepted one of her awards she admitted to the crowd, “I do have one of the longest lasting relationships right now…and that’s with my fans”.

When Justin Beiber received his Top Male Artist Award he made a reference to all the “Bull S&*t” that has been going on and needs to be taken seriously, which followed by a crowd full of boos.

Right in the middle was Gotye who won a total of 4 awards for his “Somebody That I Used To Know” single. And Prince was honored with a Icon Award.

Madonna was honored with the Top Touring Artist Award for her MDNA 2012 tour which brought in $305 million. A 2 minute, 20 second video of concert preceded her arrival to the stage which followed her stating, “It took longer to negotiate whether I could show my ass in that trailer than it took to negotiate that tour!” She later humbly thanked her fans for the three-decades of support, ”A showgirl needs her fans.” she simply stated.

EDM was not a loser in any way of the night, David Guetta, who won in the new category of EDM artist and performed with Akon and Ne-Yo, explained a brief history of reading Billboard Magazine when he was growing up in Paris. “When they put me on the cover four years ago and said EDM would be big, I thought ‘these guys are crazy – this will never happen’,” he said. “Imagine how I feel today.”

Other performances of the night were will.i.am  and Justin Bieber doing “#Thatpower,” Pitbull and Christina Aguillera’s “Feel This Moment” with a guest solo from A-ha’s Morten Harket (“Take On Me“), Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” and, set in kung fu movie motif, Chris Brown’s “Fine China.”

Nicki Minaj gave Lil Wayne a lap dance during “High School” and during Miguel’s performance of “Adorn” ended in scary fashion when he landed on a pair of fans heads during a leap from the stage. They were fine, brought back stage, and Miguel personally apologized to them.

Deadmau5: Keeping Friends Away and Enemies Further

After a short time off, Deadmau5 was expected to be a bit more relaxed and less on edge…not so much. Now’s he’s taken on the bully roll in the EDM industry…but don’t tell him that, because he wouldn’t care.

It was reported back in February that during an interview with Vibe magazine the 32 year old DJ was very vocal about his feelings towards Kanye West and a few of his genre jockey mates.

In the interview he stated, “I **cking hate him,” Referring to Kanye. “He’s just trying too hard. But the problem is he’s succeeding at it.”

Deadmau5, who’s real name is Joel Zimmerman, also has not been a fan of the initial use of the initials ”EDM” (Electronic Dance Music).  He liked to label the meaning as “Event Driven Marketing” due to this decades use of the word at all dance festivals, and that being the only way to get your name out their or be considered a real DJ.

He has continued on his anti-marketing rant by going after DJ Skillrex during another occasion  “Skrillex…took this brostep thing and really commercialized it,” he said in an interview. “And I’m not saying that’s bad, it’s great in a certain aspect. You got to be really careful with those mill markets, because they’ll turn on you in a **cking second.”

He also summed up the Swedish House Mafia experience as “…three of you and one **cking CD with the track on it. It’s all show pony sh**” then went to turn on Swedish producer Avicii, “He did (“Levels”), and it was all right—it was catchy—but I, dead-**cking-mau5, cannot name another Avicii track. I sh** you not.”

Just this weekend he continued to fuel this feud after reading that Avicii had done an interview for GQ Manazine. “Who the fuck does an interview for GQ anyway?” he responded. “Why start giving a **ck now? What the **ck is a GQ anyway?” After a few tweet replies from fans he continued, “For douchebags, by douchebags…You can’t outdouche the inventors of douche. Laugh it off and crash a Ferrari.”

Deadmau5 maintains that he is just being honest. “The reason why I am looked at as an a**hole is because I just don’t give a **ck about pretty much anything,” he said.

I think people liked the uptight and overworked Deadmau5 better…

55th Annual Grammy’s A Fun. Time

Sunday nights broadcast of the 55th Annual Grammy Awards was a night filled with genre mixing presentations, tributes, and shots of Taylor Swift dancing in her seat at every performance.

The Grammy Award is deemed the highest honor in the music industry. As TV has its Emmy, and movies has the Oscar, music has its Grammy. And by the look on everyones face throughout the night, this was the award they’ve been waiting for.

Taylor Swift opened the night with a circus themed (didn’t Britney do that?) performance of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”, which did not win its only nomination for Record of the Year.

LL Cool J was back at hosting the awards show for a second time. He opened with a speech about “International togetherness”, pointing out the diversity in the room ranging from Rihanna (Barbados), Adele (United Kingdom), to Gotye (Australia). He called the night,   “Your show”.

The first presenters were Pitbull & Jennifer Lopez, who “got the memo”, referring to the Grammy announcement that less upper body skin showing would be required this year.

Some of the big winners of the night were Adele for her live performance of “Set Fire To The Rain” winning Pop Solo Performance. Former American Idolette Carrie Underwood won for Best Country Solo Performance as well as Kelly Clarkson walking away with a Best Pop Vocal Album for her “Stronger Album”. Usher for Best R&B Performance for “Climax”. Beyonce for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Love On Top”. Gotye won Record of the Year, Best Alternative Album, and Best Pop Duo for his song “Somebody That I Used To Know” which features fellow Aussie, Kimbra.

Fun. came out a big winner for their debut with Best New Artist and Song the the Year for “We Are Young”, even though throughout the night they kept stating “We are old!” (there ages range from 28 to 30 years old). They also performed their latest single “Carry On” with some stage rain for effect.

In the Dance categories, Skrillex took both awards of Best Dance Recording for his single “Bangarang”, and Best Dance/Electronica Album of the same name.

Mumford & Sons won the highest award of the night, Album of the Year.

Introduced by Ellen Degeneres & Beyonce, Justin Timberlake returned to the Grammy stage to perform his new single “Suit & Tie” along with Jay-Z. Most of the night was filled with promo commercials for his album, “The 20/20 Experience”, being sold at Target when it’s drops on March 19th.

Other performances throughout the night were Frank Ocean performing “Forest Gump”, who also won in the new category of Best Urban Contemporary. Maroon 5 with Alicia Keys, on the drums, performed “Daylight”. Rihanna softened up with her single “Stay”. Bruno Mars was joined on stage with Sting, Rihanna, and the Marley brothers for a tribute to reggae and Bob Marley.

The night was closed out by LL Cool J showing us he hasn’t forgotten his rap skills, but after hour 3 rolled around, it was bad timing to try and get an average CBS watcher to stay up a past 10pm.

Electric Daisy Carnival Chicago Possible Location?

Alright Fusion listeners…. there has been a lot of speculations on where Electric Daisy Carnival will be held in Chicago.  Since not all of our listeners are from the Chicago-land area, I wanted to shed some light on the possibilities.

EDC Chicago Tweeted on December 13th that the possibility for the the 2013 event could be Soldier Field (On the Chicago Lake Front),  Chicago Land Speedway (50 miles outside the City of Chicago), or Toyota Park (25 Miles outside the City of Chicago).  The EDC Chicago twitter feed did say it confirmed the 300,000+ person venue.  So lets break down which one of these venues could hold that many people.

*Soldier Field’s Capacity is 61,500 people in the stands, its possible for another 5,000 or so to fit on the field.

*Chicago Land Speedway’s Capacity is $75,000 and sits on 930 acres of land which can hold more than 50,000 cars in its parking lots.

*Toyota Park’s Capacity is 28,000 for concerts, and only has a 6,000 car capacity in its 3 parking lots!

If I had to bet on which venue was going to be hosting the 300,000+ person crowd I would say it has to be Chicago Land Speedway!  75,000 people in the stands, room for 50,000 cars, and don’t forget all of the space on the track level.  I guess we will have to wait till January 16th for the final answer to where EDC Chicago will be held.

Check out the Promo video from 2012!

Behind the Scenes: Ellie Goulding

Our resident cutie pie with the voice as light as a feather has some awesome behind the scenes ‘Go Shows’ over on vevo that I thought was pretty interesting. Its always fun to see an artist in a different light.

When I think of Ellie Goulding, I think of ‘Lights’… hot dance beats, some crazy rhythms, and Skrillex. So, I thought it was nice and refreshing to see her singing light and airy at The Standard in LA. check it out!

Here the original song, which I also love… what do you think Fusionites? Do we love it or hate it?

Chicago Welcomes Spring Awakening

I know its really summer that’s around the corner…. I feel like the fest should be called Summer Awakening instead of SPRING Awakening, but whats in a name right? With chart topping names planned to perform this weekend at Solider Field, that is all Chicago needs to know.

The already large city is about to get even bigger with Skrillex, Afrojack, Flux Pavillion, Moby, Wolfgang Gartner, Laidback Luke, Diplo, A-Trak and many more coming to take over.

Chicago’s wild party rockin’ DJ duo comprised of Rick Carrico and Derek Berry – better known as Team Bayside High, are taking Chicago’s party scene by storm. Each and every week, they host the infamous Chi-Town dance party, “Rehab Mondays”, which won “America’s Best Party” by readers of tastemaking New York publication Paper Magazine. TBH are known for their high-octane DJ sets filled with an infectious blend of moombahton, electro, dubstep and everything in between. The duo are sure to bring the heat for the hometown crowd at Spring Awakening for a fresh breath of local talent that is not to be missed.

Who else is gearing up for a weekend full of PARTYING!? I know we are!

Who are you looking forward to seeing at Spring Awakening Music Festival?

Spring Awakening Music Fest

Chicago is ready for some music festivals, am I right Fusionites? Doesn’t it seem like there are always some great festivals going on everywhere else in the world except the Midwest? Think about it guys, between Cochella, and all the Miami winter music festivals, and Aussie’s Million fests they put on every year… we should get a chance at one too.

Its finally here! Chicago is hosting the Spring Awakening Music Fest this June 16th and 17th at Soldier Field. You’ll hear some amazing bands and dj’s that I cannot wait to tell you about. Check out a little blurb on the fest here…

Chicago is known for a few things: Beer, Brats, the Bears—and, of course, house music.  Perhaps those don’t all fit together perfectly, but it does make sense that the first ever, two-day, all EDM festival in Chicago would take place in the legendary home of the Chicago Bears.  On June 16 and 17, Soldier Field will play host to Spring Awakening, a massive gathering of dance music featuring some of the top performers and producers from across the world, with names such as Skrillex, Afrojack, Moby, Flux Pavilion, Diplo, Datsik and Dillon Francis all set to throw down in a setting so encapsulating of Midwest experience, Norman Rockwell couldn’t have dreamed it better.

Unlike other big Chicago music festivals, this one doesn’t come with a big Chicago price tag. Two-Day passes are retailing at $119.99, with Single-Day tickets priced at $65.00  There’s also a VIP experience package, with Two-Days for $239.99 and Single-Days for $120.00 Tickets are available through Clubtix.net which, thankfully, means less ticket surcharges than that other ticket site.

For more great info on the fest and where to get tickets visit their main page, the Facebook and don’t forget to bring your party hat!

The Multi-Talented Amba Shepherd

Amba Shepherd is the latest triple threat to come out of Sidney Australia! Amba is a singer, songwriter, and producer who is gaining world recognition and success through her songwriting abilities, producing, and voice!

If her name sounds familiar it is! Amba is gracing our Fusion charts at #15 having featured vocals on the Finnish producing duo Marcus Maison & Will Dragens song, “Reign”.

According to Ambas website a few of her credits include writing, producing, and singing on tracks such as Ferry Corstens “Walk On Air ” ft Pierre, and Virtual Riots  “Superhuman”. On the subject of her voice, when Amba sings it is soothing almost shy to a point, but when paired with a prog-house beat, her voice can pierce through you having a deep affect on your intake of her lyrics.

Recently Amba has been working in writing sessions with accredited producers, songwriters, and labels such as the OWSLA label which has worked with Skrillex, and talents like Guy Roche who has produced for Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion, Phillipe- Marc Antequil who has worked with Jesse J, Niklas King who has worked with Jennifer Lopez and so on!

Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open because there will be more to come from Amba Shepherd in the future! Until then keep listening to Fusion for more hits!
