Dev Album Review

The talented Devin aka Dev has finally released her much anticipated album The Night the Sun Came Up and here is our review for you Fusionites!

With her long time collaborators The Cataracts helping Dev write and produce every song, the album is peppered with dark story lines along with some strictly fun club bangers that will make even the most shy wallflower bust a move.

The lack of pipes that Dev has is forgivable because of the way she carries herself through a song. She does not sing but sing/talks through verses that is comparable to the likes of Lily Allen and Robyn! When paired with the Cataracs beats the album can sound reminiscent of old school freestyle tracks like Debbie Debs “When I Hear Music” or “Look Out Weekend” a throwback to those daytime house parties, back when you and I were cutting class and looking for a good time! She shots out LA numerous times on the album and sings about rolling with her home girls in the song “In My Trunk”.

Once you get to tracks like “Breathe” and “Lightspeed” in which the producers go hard with the digital beats, you can almost guess when the song will slow down then start back up fast and loud again. Most of the songs on the album do this and it’s as predictable as JLO’s dance numbers halfway through every single music video she does! But you are not mad at her for doing so, just as we are not mad at JLO for showing off her dancing chops. On the contrary it mixes it up keeping the songs fresh and funky.

As a listener I did think that Dev made some odd choices when it came to the song selection on the album. Songs like “Take Her from You” Devs homage to rock n roll and an obsessive relationship, with some added whistling in between, is great and one of my favorite songs because it is different, but with songs like “Kiss My Lips” and “Shadows” it just felt that the producers were forcing these songs to fit in on the album when really…they just didn’t. This is in no way saying that the two songs above are bad, on the contrary they are fun to listen to and with Devs voice and storytelling ability, she can make you slow down and listen to the words just as she intended.

The remixes breath a spicier flava into both “In The Dark” and “Bass Down Low” with collaborations featuring rapper Flo Rida and Tinie Tempah and with the majority of the songs getting high marks in the pop and dance genre Devs work is consistent and rivals her peers like Katy Perry and Ke$ha! Dev has her own style that is sure to keep her around in the future for a long time to come. The Night the Sun Came Up has definitely left its mark on our Fusion charts so let’s hope Dev keeps doing what she is doing into her mommy years because whether she is preggers, a mom, a fiance, or a wife, this girl has the talent to put out great dance music for years to come!

Electro-Crunk Artist DEV Likes Her Bass Down Low

Hey all you Fusion Heads out there, your girlfriend Gerrie AKA B-EZ is back and I’m here to tell you about DEV the amazing pop diva who’s recent single “In The Dark” has been blowing up the airwaves! To say this woman has Flavor is an understatement! Born of Portuguese and Mexican descent, she grew up in Tracy, California, and at the age of four, this girl was a part of the U.S. Olympic Development Program!

Discovered on MySpace after a friend of hers posted Dev singing a song, later called “Blonde Trick” a response to her ex-boyfriends new girlfriend, she was contacted by production team The Cataracs and was signed by the LA based label, Indie-Pop.

In April of 2010 the Cataracs produced a single for Far East MovementLike A G6” using a verse from Devs single “Booty Bounce” as the chorus. The song made it all the way to number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart and sold over three million downloads in the U.S. alone. Signing with Universal Republic in October of 2010, Dev worked on her debut album The Night the Sun Came Up with the Cataracs in Costa Rica.

She says of her artistic development, “Typical pop music is not what I’m only good at. I have a lot of ideas, and hip-hop influence records, and electro ballads.” She has said that Eminem had influenced her at a young age. Her style has an electro sing-talk approach, and likes that her fans have embraced her “pop music with rap roots” style.

Hollywood Reporter described her “futuristic” and “Pulsing” sound to musicians of electro clash like Peaches.

In an interview with Guidetogay.com she describes how the LBGT Community has supported her career, “I’d like to think that it has grown, and that’s the only way it’s changed, which is cool. From blogs I see and kids who reply to me on Twitter and Facebook, I’d like to think the gay community really has my back and supports me, which is awesome. I really support them a lot as far as the shows I do and things. Yeah, I’d like to think we really have each others’ backs, which will only get bigger, because I think it’s a really positive thing.”

She’s been featured on albums such as David Guetta’s Nothing But the Beat on a song called “I Just Wanna F” with Timbaland and Afrojack and Demi Levato’s album Unbroken on a song called, “Who’s That Boy.”

Her singles “In the Dark” and “Bass Down Low” reached number 11 and 61 on the U.S. Pop Charts in both 2010 and 2011 while crashing into the top ten on Billboards pop radio charts. Her newest single “Naked” features Enrique Iglesias  will be released January of 2012, one month after she and her fiance expect to have their first little bundle of joy, a baby girl due on Christmas Eve!

Check out her Videos “In The Dark” and my personal favorite “Bass Down Low.” Until next week Fusion Heads peace and love!

MORE Dance Tidbits: Dev photoshoot; Kaskade #1 DJ

Dev with The Cataracs

(Dave Tripper) One photoshoot apparently goes a long way. Dev and The Cataracs paired for a fun photoshoot to be featured in the November issues of both Seventeen and Filter magazines. They struck a pose enough for a two-page spread for the fashion line American Rag.

(Dave Tripper/Las Vegas Weekly) Kaskade has been voted the #1 DJ in the world according to DJ Times. The spinmaster will receive his award October 9 at the Marquee Nightclub.
